The Spanish-American War: A Selected, Annotated Bibliography is a guide to materials in the collection of St. Louis Public Library which may prove of use to the person researching the Spanish-American War. Materials included are all books, although periodicals can also sometimes prove of interest to the genealogist (items #2 and #3 can help the researcher locate periodical articles of possible interest). Items included in this list will usually contain rosters or muster lists of men who served in a particular regiment (or from a particular state). Item entries include St. Louis Public Library department names and call numbers (most items are located at the Central Library, either in the Stacks or the History & Genealogy Department. A topical index which concludes this guide will help the researcher find items of special interest. |

Consists of 2 separate and distinct parts. The first part is a series of chapters which provide background information on large-scale army units- divisions and above. The second part is a bibliography listing printed information sources about army units of varying size. Volume 3 covers the siege of Santiago de Cuba; Volume 2 covers the battles of Las Guasimas, El Caney, and San Juan; Volume 1 is an introduction to the Cuban campaign, and includes information about the naval blockade of Havana and Santiago Harbors. Nice history of the regiment by its colonel. Includes two interesting sections of b&w photos, plus maps which show hometowns of 8th Ohio volunteers, Camp Alger, Va, and the area in Cuba where the 8th Ohio was stationed. Appendices include the text of a memorial service for the 8th's dead held Nov. 16, 1898 in Wooster, Ohio, and an alphabetized roster of the regiment which lists name, rank, hometown, and company. The volume for 1898 has a number of interesting features. "Expenses Incurred and Paid By the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania," pp. 67-98, lists various payments made to PA soldiers of all ranks. Reports by regimental commanders sometimes list names of various regiment members. A good list of 8th Infantry Regiment members is on pp. 194-208. A list of war deaths suffered by the 9th Infantry is on pp. 226-27. A list of 12th Infantry deaths is on p. 291.
